Configuring Dynamic SLIP at University of Illinois

Last Update: 17 November 1994

With the release of OS/2 Warp comes built-in support for SLIP, and the Champaign-Urbana Area OS/2 User Group now has a script to access the terminal servers at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The script was based largely on the work of Matt Hucke, with some modifications by M. Woo. The necessary files are here.

Installing Warp Internet Connection for OS/2 for the UIUC Terminal Server (dynamic SLIP)

This document assumes that you have already installed OS/2 Warp 3.0 and the Internet Connection for OS/2, which is included in the BonusPak. The script csoslip.cmd is based largely on the work of Matt Hucke, who was generous enough to post it onto Usenet.

I. The Logon Script

  1. The file "csoslip.cmd" resides in this archive; copy it to your computer
  2. The file "csoslip.cmd" can (and should) be customized for your particular needs. For instance, it currently doesn't redial in response to a busy signal. For now, it should work as is, albeit not optimally.

II. Basic setup

Since you won't be using IBM Advantis, you'll need to configure SlipPM for an alternate Internet provider, which in this case is UIUC.

  1. Open the "IBM Internet Connection for OS/2" folder
  2. Open the "Internet Utilities" folder
  3. Open the "Dial Other Internet Providers" object
  4. Click on the "Add Provider" button to add the info for UIUC
  5. On the first setup page:
    1. Fill out the "Provider Name" and "Nickname" boxes with whatever name(s) you wish
    2. In the "Login Script" box, type

      <drive>:\<path>\csoslip.cmd <alias> <password>

      where

<drive> and <path> refer to the subdirectory in which the file csoslip.cmd resides (csoslip.cmd is included in this archive)

<alias> is the logon name you use to logon the UIUC terminal server>

<password> is the password you use when you logon to the UIUC terminal server

    3. Click on the Next button to get to the second page.

    On the second setup page:

    1. If there is already a number in the "MTU Size" box, leave it be. If there is no number, type the number 1005
    2. In the "Domain Nameserver" box, type the number 128.174.5.58
    3. In the "Your Domain Name" box, type "uiuc.edu" (w/o quotes)
    4. Click on the Next button to go to the third page

    On the third setup page:

    1. In the News Server box, type "news.cso.uiuc.edu" (w/o quotes)
    2. In the Gopher Server box, type "gopher.cso.uiuc.edu" (w/o quotes)
    3. The third page can further be customized by filling in your preferred WWW Server, as well as Mail Server information, if you use POP Mail.
    4. Click on the Next button to go to the fourth page

    On the fourth setup page:

    1. Choose the correct settings for your modem
    2. Click on the Okay button to save the information, and name it whatever you like

III. Connecting to UIUC via SLIP

  1. Let's give the setup a try...
  2. Click on the Dial button to begin dialing. Make sure that modem is in the "hung up" state before dialing (DTR lowered)
  3. SlipPM should automatically dial the UIUC terminal server and establish the SLIP connection for you. The last line in the Status box should begin with the word "ifconfig"
  4. Now, let's test the connection with something fairly simple:
    1. Open the Telnet object in the "Internet Utilities" folder
    2. If the connection is successful, you should see the Telnetpm window
    3. Click on "Connection" in the menu
    4. Click on "Open Session"
    5. In the Host Name box, type in the address of the machine on which your Internet account resides (e.g., uxa.cso.uiuc.edu)
    6. Choose the correct terminal emulator and window size
    7. Click on Okay to establish the connection
    8. Log in as usual
    9. Congratulations! You've set up SLIP successfully!

one thing at a time. Open Gopher/PM, NewsReader/2, etc., etc....
